For centuries, gravity has been the quiet sculptor of our universe. From Newton’s falling apple to Einstein’s warping of space-time, we’ve accepted gravity as a fundamental force. But what if we’ve misunderstood it entirely? What if gravity is not a force, but a feeling? Not a law, but an inherited agreement? Not a universal truth, but a coherence effect that emerges when our inner world aligns with the outer one?
Once upon a time, right here, right now, people took flight to the Moon and back. This is a story about gravity. And about how it might not exist in the way we think.
The official story (and where it breaks).
Newton (1687): Gravity is a force acting at a distance. His law:
[ F = G \frac{m_1 m_2}{r^2} ]
…tells us that two objects pull on each other with a force proportional to their mass and inversely proportional to the square of their distance. It works. But Newton couldn’t say why it worked, or how the force moved through space.
Einstein (1915): Gravity isn’t a force—it’s the curvature of space-time. Matter bends the fabric of reality, and other matter moves along those curves. Beautiful. But it still assumes time and space are fundamental.
Wheeler-DeWitt (1967): In quantum gravity, time disappears entirely:

This equation describes the universe as a timeless wave function. No flow. No motion. Just states. And if there’s no time and no space, then what is gravity even acting within?
Gravity as consensus, not force.
What if gravity isn’t pulling us down—it’s holding us together? What if gravity is what we feel when our sensory systems—proprioception, balance, time perception, selfhood—are in agreement? In this view, gravity is a coherence field, not a pull. It emerges when our inner model of the world is stable, predictable, aligned.
Where that model breaks down—black holes, quantum scales, altered states—gravity breaks down too.
We’ve asked:
- Why does gravity behave predictably here, but strangely in unfamiliar places?
- Why do mystics describe weightlessness during moments of revelation?
- Why do people with hypermobility, dissociation, or trauma often report feeling like they’re floating or coming apart?
And the answer could be: because gravity might not be universal. It might be contextual—a relational product of nervous system coherence and expectation.
Is gravity inherited? An intergeneretional expectation?
Some instincts are passed down through generations: the fear of snakes, the startle at loud noise, the grasping reflex. What if gravity is one of them? Not the pull itself, but the expectation of it.
We are born into a world that believes in gravity. We learn to fall, to stand, to hold tension. Our proprioceptive and vestibular systems synchronize to stabilize us in space.
But babies don’t perceive gravity the way adults do. In their early weeks, they see movement in frames—discrete images with halo trails. Continuity must be learned. And with it, gravity.
The rebels.
And then there are the exceptions—the animals who seem to defy gravity altogether:
- Bumblebees: whose flight violates classical aerodynamic models.
- Flying snakes: flattening their bodies to glide in eerie, impossible arcs.
- Basilisk lizards: sprinting across water.
- Hummingbirds: hovering and maneuvering in 3D space like tiny anti-gravity machines.
What if these animals have different gravitational expectations embedded in their neurology? What if their sensory maps never reinforced the kind of gravity we assume?
Mysticism and the lightness of being.
Across spiritual traditions, there is a recurring theme: lightness as a sign of awakening.
- Sufi whirling dervishes spin to dissolve ego, describing a sensation of levitation.
- Buddhist monks speak of weightlessness during deep meditation.
- Yogic Siddhis include laghima: the power of becoming light, even flying.
- Jesus walked on water, ascended to heaven, and in moments of deepest truth, seemed to suspend gravity itself.
These weren’t just metaphors. They may have been altered gravitational experiences, caused by altered states of consciousness where continuity broke—and with it, the expectation of weight.
Even nudism (yes, nudism!) carries a whisper of this: shedding cultural weight, stripping identity layers, releasing the psychic tension we carry in clothes and form. Feeling lighter when we stop pretending to be what we’re not.
If there’s no space, no time, no place, what is movement?
If time is not fundamental, and space is not absolute, then motion is not real in the way we think.
Maybe we’re not moving through time—we’re jumping from one frame to the next.
- Babies perceive frames, not flow.
- Dreams break time.
- Dissociation breaks time.
- Flow states stretch time.
Maybe reality is a lattice of possible frames, and we only move into the ones we expect to be real. In that case, movement is not traversal—it’s selection.
We don’t walk. We shift.
We don’t fall. We agree to.
Welcome to the non-gravitas reality, where going to the gym to be strong and fit is just a suggestion.
If gravity is expectation, not force—do we need the gym?
Maybe.
Maybe not.
Maybe your body adapts to resistance because it believes in the story you’re telling it. Maybe if you change the story—train the frame instead of the form—you can grow, heal, fly without lifting anything at all.
Unless, of course, you love the gym. In which case, it becomes sacred. Another ritual of coherence.
One more thing: defying expectations.
What is gravity if it’s not a force?
It’s the feeling of being held.
It’s the glue of coherence.
It’s the song our senses hum when they agree on who we are, and where.
And when that agreement breaks, gravity loosens.
And when we remember that the agreement is ours to make—
