Time, Space, and Awareness: Are We Measuring Reality or Creating It?

For centuries, physics and philosophy have struggled with the nature of reality. Is time real? Is space fundamental? Are we truly experiencing an objective world, or are we merely constructing it through awareness?

Modern physics suggests that space and time may not exist as independent entities—they may be nothing more than measurements, senses, or even stories we tell ourselves. This challenges the very nature of what we call “objective reality.” If space and time are not fundamental, then what does that mean for our experience? And if measurement itself creates reality, then what happens when we change the way we measure?

The Duality of Reality: Subjectivity vs. Objectivity.

Reality, as we experience it, can be divided into two seemingly opposing perspectives. Subjective reality is the world of personal/individual experience, perception, and internal states. It is shaped by awareness, memory, language, and cognition. No two people experience the world the same way because awareness is inherently a unique, first-person phenomenon. In contrast, objective reality is the “measured” world—the world of physics, science, and external validation. It exists whether or not an individual is aware of it.

But what if even this “hard reality” is just a framework of measurement rather than something fundamental? Quantum mechanics suggests that objects do not have fixed properties until they are measured. In quantum labs, we only measure the quantum field one measurement at a time. But in “the real world”, the quantum field is measured a thousand times over by air, by light, by trees, by us. This might mean that the reality we assume to be “out there” is not independent of observation—it is shaped by it. If space and time are just measurements, then even objective reality depends on observers measuring it.

Space and Time as Senses: The Wheeler-DeWitt and Bell’s Theorem Perspective

The Wheeler-DeWitt equation, a cornerstone of quantum gravity, does not include time. This suggests that time is not a fundamental part of reality—it is something we impose on the universe. If time were fundamental, it should be present in the core equations of physics. Instead, it seems to be a construct that emerges when observers interact with a system.

Bell’s Theorem, which won the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics, further challenges our understanding of space. It shows that entangled particles behave as if the distance between them does not exist. In other words, two entangled particles, no matter how far apart, influence each other instantaneously—defying classical notions of space and locality. This suggests that space is not a fixed structure but a relational property that depends on measurement.

If time and space are not fundamental, then they may function more like senses—ways that consciousness organizes reality rather than aspects of reality itself. This aligns with how the brain processes time: the prefrontal cortex (PFC) helps construct our experience of time, different species experience time differently, and language affects time perception—some cultures experience time as circular rather than linear. If time is partially a story we tell ourselves, then space may be as well. This suggests that timespace = awareness—not as a metaphor, but as a literal function of perception.

Measuring Reality, Even When We’re Not Looking

We traditionally think of senses as just the “big five”—sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. But the human body measures reality in far more ways than that.

Proprioception allows us to sense the position of our body parts without seeing them. Chronoception gives us an internal awareness of time passing. Equilibrioception keeps us balanced, even in complete darkness. Thermoceptiondetects heat, while magnetoreception, which exists in many animals, may also subtly influence human orientation. Even when we sleep, wear VR headsets, or close our eyes, we are still measuring reality through these unconscious sensory systems. Our awareness of space, time, and movement never actually stops—it simply shifts into different forms of measurement.

Even if an observer is wearing a VR headset, they are still measuring reality. They are interacting, processing, and engaging awareness to create a sense of time and space. If space were truly fundamental, a simulated space should not “feel real.” Yet it does. If time were absolute, our perception of it should be fixed. Yet it changes. If reality existed independently of awareness, then removing awareness should not change it. And yet, quantum mechanics suggests that measurement (observation) collapses probability waves into definite states. This means that time, space, and measurement are all linked to awareness—perhaps they are different expressions of the same underlying process.

Koans as the Key to Understanding Reality Beyond Measurement

Zen koan is a paradoxical riddle designed to break the mind out of awareness, or habitual measurement. It disrupts the default frame of perception by forcing the mind to experience reality directly, without categorization. Some classic koans ask:

“What is the sound of one hand clapping?”
“If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound?”

These are not riddles to be “solved”—they are tools to reveal the limits of awareness itself. If timespace = awareness, then the only way to truly understand reality is to break the mind’s dependence on measurement.

What happens when we stop trying to measure?
What remains when we stop defining reality through perception?

The Ultimate Koans: Beyond Space and Time

“What is the sound of heartbreak?”
Does it exist before it is felt? Is it a vibration, a frequency, or the silence that follows? If pain exists outside of words, then what is it before we give it meaning?

“What is the math of two souls that are One?”
If 1 + 1 = 2, then what happens when two merge completely? Is their sum still two, or something entirely beyond numbers? If two people dissolve into unity, do they exist as separate or as a new whole?

Conclusion: Awareness is the Only Fundamental Reality

Space is not absolute—it emerges from perception. Time is not flowing—it is a construct of the mind. Even “hard reality” requires measurement, meaning it depends on observers. If timespace = awareness, then measurement is what creates reality, not the other way around.

If measurement and awareness are inseparable, then reality is not something we passively observe—it is something we actively create.

One More Thing: If all reality is measurement, then what happens when you stop measuring? What remains beyond awareness?
